Details for 2016 Annual Reunion of Sultana Descendants and Friends- Knoxville, Tennessee, April 22-23

Here’s details about this year’s annual reunion of the Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday, April 22nd, and Saturday, April 23rd.

I have booked a block of rooms for the attendees at the recently remodeled (2014) Holiday Inn at Cedar Bluff, just west of downtown on I-40/I-75.

The room rate for the Sultana Association is $99 + tax per room (normally $149 + tax). Included in the special rate is a free hot breakfast (not a Continental breakfast) for each room occupant.

(Note that you do not have to stay at the Holiday Inn – there are a number of motels in Knoxville.)

Online: After clicking on this link, you will be taken to a page where you will simply enter the arrival and departure dates for our reunion (April 22nd and 24th) and then click on “Availability”. Decide if you want a room with one king bed or two queens, then click on the blue button that says “Apply” and go from there.

If you decide to arrive a day early or stay a day extra (Sunday), you can still get the special rate of $99 + tax, just ask for it since the rooms blocked off now only have the special rate only for the nights of April 22nd and 23rd.

Preliminary Schedule for Two Days of Activities:

Friday evening at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2500 Maryville Pike, Knoxville, TN, 37920

3:00 p.m. The downstairs Fellowship Hall will be open to set up your personal displays relating to the Sultana story. You can display anything you want on the tables such as documents, artifacts, photos, etc. It’s always enjoyable to see the collections of others! These displays will safe if you decide to leave them while you go to dinner.

These several hours are a good time to meet new people and to mix and mingle!

7:00 p.m. – Activities in the upstairs sanctuary. Includes short talks, video presentation, singing and music, announcements, etc. Will conclude between 9 and 10.

Saturday tour of Knoxville Civil War Sites

8:00 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. – load coach bus at and depart from Holiday Inn, Cedar Bluff

This is basically the tour the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable gave for many years. Among the stops will be two authentic fortifications, Ft. Dickerson and Ft. Higley; the National Cemetery with its Union monument; and the Confederate Cemetery with its monument.

The Confederate Cemetery is owned by the Mabry-Hazen Foundation, a non profit entity. The Mabry-Hazen home was built prior to the Civil War and has a rich, family history. If there’s time, we will tour both the house and cemetery. If not, we will only visit the cemetery. Either way, the cost is the same at $5.00 per person.

We will end the tour with a special ceremony at the beautiful Sultana monument to celebrate its 100th anniversary! It was initially dedicated on July 4, 1916. It should be a wonderful experience that includes a Union color guard, music from a fife and drum corps, firing salute, solo medley, etc. The Major William A. McTeer Camp No. 39 (SUV) will be participating and is involved in the planning.

Lunch: 1.5 hours – We will stop at the S and S Cafeteria on Kingston Pike. This is a cafeteria style restaurant so that each person can choose whatever he/she wants. You will pay as you leave.

Saturday Evening Banquet–Bearden Banquet Hall

7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

We will enjoy a good meal followed by singing, announcements, etc., concluding with our moving candlelight memorial service.

The one price of $22.00 each includes the meal, tax, and set-up fee. The meal will be served buffet style comprised of the following:

–Garden salad with assorted dressings
–Choice of either roast beef, au jus, or Southern fried catfish
–Two vegetables: stuffed baked potato and green beans
–Dessert: choice of pecan pie or rich chocolate cake
–Rolls and butter
–Drinks: choice of iced tea, coffee, water or soft drinks

Total costs include the following:

Bus tour–$20.00
Mt. Olive Baptist Church room fees–$3.00
Bearden Banquet Hall evening meal–$22.00
Mabry-Hazen Historic Home and Confederate Cemetery–$5.00
Reunion Ribbon–$2.00

Grand Total $52.00 per person
